On June 14, 2025, the American people will be going to go the streets in the millions and refusing to let a king rule over them again.
"No Kings Day" is a nationwide day of protest planned to coincide with President Trump's 79th birthday and the U.S. Army's 250th anniversary. Organized by the "No Kings" coalition and other pro-democracy groups, the protests aim to counter a military parade being held in Washington, D.C., which supporters view as an extravagant and unnecessary celebration of Trump's presidency rather than a patriotic event.
“No Kings is a national day of defiance,” the website for the protests reads. “From city blocks to small towns, from courthouse steps to community parks, we’re taking action to reject authoritarianism, billionaire-first politics, and the militarization of our democracy."
The events are designed to highlight concerns about Trump's leadership and to promote a vision of democracy centered around citizen participation and unity. The "No Kings" coalition emphasizes that the flag symbolizes the collective spirit of the American people rather than any individual leader, and they encourage citizens to participate in these actions to demonstrate their commitment to democratic principles.
This modern parallel to 1776 highlights ongoing concerns about democratic governance, civil rights, judicial independence, military and police powers, immigration, trade, and political accountability that resonate with the original colonial grievances against King George III.
“Donald Trump wants tanks in the street and a made-for-TV display for dominance for his birthday,” "No Kings" says on its website. “No thrones, no crowns, no kings.”
At the time of this writing, the group expects around 1,800 rallies to take place on Saturday, with events planned in all 50 states but not Washington, D.C. Trump told reporters on Tuesday that anyone protesting the Army’s parade “will be met with very big force.”
